Adult Acne
Adults can get acne in their 30s, 40s and 50s, and some will even develop it for the first time as an adult (referred to as adult-onset acne). Acne affects 25% of men and 50% of women at some point in their adult lives. It is most common in perimenopausal women.
Causes of adult acne include
Hormone fluctuations:
Women often experience fluctuating hormone levels around the time of their periods, during pregnancy and in the years surrounding menopause. Switching or stopping birth control pills also causes hormonal changes.
Stress:
In response to stress, our bodies produce more cortisol, which affects androgen levels (e.g. testosterone). These hormones stimulate oil glands in the skin, which can result in acne.
Skin care products:
Many skin care products can clog pores or trigger breakouts. If you have acne, look for products labeled “non-comedogenic” (won’t clog pores) or non-acnegenic (won’t cause breakouts).
Hair products:
Certain gels, pomades, and hairsprays can lead to clogged pores, skin inflammation, and acne on the forehead and temples. Ingredients like petroleum, silicones and mineral oil could be to blame.
Family history:
Thanks to genetics, some people are just more likely to get adult acne than others.
Medication related:
Acne can be a side effect of some medications. If you are concerned your acne is related to a medication, talk to the physician who prescribed it (don’t stop taking the medication without the advice of a physician).
Underlying medical condition:
Acne can be a sign of an underlying medical condition affecting hormones. The acne often clears after the medical condition is treated.
Treatments for adult acne
Adult skin is different than teenage skin. It produces less oil, has a slower rate of cell turnover, and heals at a different rate. Products designed for teenage skin are often too harsh for adults, so using them can lead to irritation and dryness. At the same time, adults are concerned with visible signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone.
AlumierMD acne products are formulated with adult acne in mind. We combine naturally powerful yet gentle anti-acne ingredients with effective anti-aging ingredients to reveal clearer and younger-looking skin. Anti-aging peptides firm and strengthen the skin, and antioxidants quench free radicals from UV rays and pollution.
