How to Deal with Your Winter Skin Woes

As soon as winter hits, we bundle up for warmth but sometimes we forget that even our exposed skin needs their TLC during this season. Fact: our skin pays quite the price during the winter months. Even the most “normal” of skin types can experience drastic changes as soon as the temps start heading south. So, what happens exactly when the temps drop?

The sub-zero temperatures are one thing, but that cold wind creates next level havoc on your skin. Cold air tightens the pores thereby reducing blood circulation. The production of sebum —a naturally occurring oil which traps moisture next to the skin is dramatically decreased and creates the perfect environment for dryness. Skin that is already dry on the best of days will experience even more drastic dehydration resulting in cracks and chafing.

  1. Cotton can rob your skin of the moisture it needs. Which is a no-no especially when moisture is hard to come by. Replace your cotton with silk which is less irritating for the skin as well.
  1. Increase the intensity of your moisturizer. Winter skin is dryer. Which means that your usual moisturizer that you would normally apply during the warmer months won’t cut it. Opt for a richer intense version so that your skin can relish in the much-needed moisture.
